About Pankow

Berlin's third borough, Pankow, has the largest population in the city.

The administrative reform of 2001 combined Prenzlauer Berg and Weißensee districts and, instead of hyphenating the name like so many other new areas, gave it the new name of Pankow. It is named for the Panke River that borders the region to the northeast. Reinickendorf and Mitte lie to the west and Lichtenberg to the east. Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg borders Pankow borough on its southern edge. Although this area has the highest population numbers, it falls behind Treptow-Köpenick in land area.
